MOTHER TONGUE AND ITS IMPORTANCE
Mother tongue should be the first thing that any baby that comes into the world hears. Mother tongue is part of the family at it is very important for children to learn it. It is heritage and something that differentiates and defines that uniqueness of a person. It is the personal, social and cultural identity of children.
Research suggests that while a speaker may develop fluency in a foreign language after about two years of learning and training, it can actually take between five and seven years for that child to be on the same working level as their mother tongue speaking counterparts.
The importance of mother tongue is profound. It can be seen in many ways. It has been seen that skills acquired while learning it can be used for learning other languages also. When a child develops good reading, writing or speaking skills in one particular language it becomes easier to apply the same skills in different languages too. Since everyone around the child speaks in the mother tongue its easier for children to grasp the language.
Mother-tongue is the most important instrument for bringing about emotional development of the individual. The emotional effect of literature and poetry is something which is of vital importance in the development and refinement of emotions.
Original ideas are the product of one’s own mother tongue. On account of the facility of thought and expression, new and original ideas take birth and get shape only in one’s own language.
Parents should be examples and role models. They should try to talk to their children in their mother tongue as much as possible. It is often seen that parents talk to their children in English so that they are profound in that language. But they fail to see that this only degrades their understanding capabilities and grasping powers as it takes them more time to grasp it and they begin to feel less confident about themselves.
Parents should encourage them regarding their mother tongue and tell them the history behind them. Hence we can see that it is very important for children to read, write and speak their mother tongue fluently as it is part of the holistic development of the child and well as the community.
