Why we celebrate Mother’s Day: how it began?
Today everyone celebrates Mother’s Day by the means of flowers, greeting cards, gifts. But hardly anyone knows that when it started in the United States, the holiday had a much more somber focus, and was not even really about moms.
The mother’s day celebrated today began in the 1850s when Ann Reeves Jarvis set up Mother’s Day Work Clubs that sought to improve sanitary conditions, reduce infant mortality and later help wounded soldiers during the Civil War. A few years later, she created a Mother’s Friendship Day to unite the mothers of veterans from the Confederacy and the Union.
The popularity of Mother’s Day however was triggered by the death of Ann Reeves Jarvis. Anna Jarvis (D/o Ann Reeves Jarvis) organized the first formal Mother’s Day in 1908. And set on the mission to popularize it.
The first versions of Mother’s Day were simple family gatherings, often centered around churches. The official flowers’ of Mother’s Day are Carnations. A red flower was used to honor a living Mother while a White one honors a departed one.
When Mother’s Day truly gained popularity, Ann Jarvis turned against it. She disliked it because of the high degree of commercialization around it. She spent her remaining life and inheritance trying to fight it.
Despite founding a day that essentially celebrates families, Ann Jarvis never Married or had children. She was so focused on returning Mother’s day to her original vision that she never had time or patience for men largely uninterested in honoring mothers.
So the next time you celebrate mother’s day, don’t fall into the trap of greeting cards, just gift her a small flower and vow to show her the same love and affection that she has given you for so many years.
