1. Encourage kids to do things and appreciate their effort

Let your kids make their projects on their own and appreciate whatever efforts they put in them. The outcome might not be as perfect if you had made it but it sure gives your child a chance to learn, it build’s up his/her confidence and he/she will likely improve in every project thereafter.

2. Allow kids to take a few decisions

Small decisions like what dress to wear in a party and what they wanna order at a restaurant should be left upto the kids. The amount of decision taking responsibility should go up as kids progress in age, things like what subjects to chose in their electives which extra curricular activities to pursue should be primarily the kids decision. You should be there to help them and guide them but they should never feel like you are taking the decisions for them

3. Give them small responsibilities around the house

Teaching children to make their bed in the morning, finishing their home-work and cleaning their lunch box teaches them good lifestyle habits as well as trains their minds to remember and do tasks. Your kids might not initially like you for all the boring tasks they were assigned but soon it will become a part of habit and they will stop resenting them.

4. Help your kids find answers rather than tell them

Teach your kids the process of coming up with the right answers. You can do this by asking the right questions. For example, when your kids come up to you with a question ask them what options they have, add options if some are missing, ask them what is the best option and listen to their logic. Help the come to the right decision themselves instead of just spelling out the answer.

5. Allow them to set goals

Allow your kids to decide what they wish to achieve, let them give the direction and you can guide them through the process and ensure that the goals are both challenging but achievable. These self set goals provide the kids with the necessary motivation to achieve something, a trait very necessary for success in career later on.

So keep the above things in mind, and I am sure you will see more responsibility in your child’s behavior. Do let me know how they worked out for you in the comments below, and give any other suggestions that I may have missed out.
