MOBILE PHONES: WHAT IS THE RIGHT AGE TO START USING THEM?
For the longest time it has been a topic of discussion among parents regarding the right time for children to start using mobile phones. There are so many factors that parents need to think about before giving their children mobile phones. There are health issues also involved. There are mental and physical issues that come along with mobile phones.
Talking about the benefits of mobile phones it is the best and easiest way to stay in touch and also communicate when there is a lot of distance involved. That’s partly why many parents are buying their kids mobile phones. Twice as many children have phones now as in 2004. Most children — 85% of those aged 14 to 17 — have cell phones. It the same with 69% of 11-14 year olds and 31% of kids aged 8-10, according to a 2010 survey.
The same security goes the other way around also. Children also feel safe when they know that their parents are just a call away. Children also may see having a phone as part of fitting in with their friends. But there are also some potential downsides to consider.
Considering health, mobile phones produce a lot of radiations which is very harmful for young children. Constant and long term usage of them has proven to have devastating effect on the brain. It’s possible for users of phones to reduce their exposure by spending less time on the phone or by using a hands-free device or speaker mode when making a call. But this also does not completely ward off effect of mobile radiation.
Apart from all this, social media is also a big factor that comes along with mobile phones. The usage of social media is a whole different worry for parents.
Another ill effect of them is its effect on sleep. Continuous exposure to their screens is effects the sleep cycle of children tremendously. This in turn effects their whole day and their activities during the whole day. Along with this there is also texting while doing other things. Children tend to think they can multi-task very well. They often apply the same while using their mobile phones with is not a great habit.
So parents should make sure their children are ready to face all of this and also make their own decisions wisely. Usually the appropriate age for children to have mobile phones is over the age of 14 or 15. At this age children are wise enough to make their own decisions and make appropriate use of their mobile phones.
