Social media: A pill to swallow or not!!!
Social media and social networking has become an important part of everyone’s daily life and routine. It is very entertaining and helpful in keeping in touch with our friends. That being said social media and networking does more harm than good to children and young adults. The affects are seen to increase with increase in age of children.
Long hours on social media affect the health of children. It affects both the mental and physical health. When coming to physical effect it affects the eyesight, posture, back and other parts of the body. The prolonged usage of social media affects the mental health of children drastically. It leads to lesser sense of satisfaction and tends to depression.
It has also been seen that children who are addicted to social media and networking tend to be more violent and aggressive. Hence they are prone to getting into and causing trouble. When children explore social media and networking they often come across cyber bullying.
They do not know how to stop being victims of cyber bullying and this leads to depression, low self confidence, inferiority complex and anxiety.
Study has shown that children who are active on social media for more than 6 hours a day are more prone to low self esteem and can be easily manipulated. Since apart from peers even strangers can give their opinion and comments children often find it harsh or unacceptable. When this happens they tend to lash out and misplace their anger. This even leads to self loath sometimes.
There is often no bound or limit to the information you can get on social media. This may lead to children getting unwanted, harmful and obscene information. Moreover, all the information available on Social media may not be true. This difference between true and false is very difficult for children and they are often driven to the wrong path due to the same.
Spending too much time on social media can affect the child’s performance at school also. Parents play a very important role in driving their children’s social media and networking. Parents should keep control of the amount of time a child spends on social media. They should restrict the children and instead of just scolding them they should make them understand as to why it is wrong and harmful. Parents should also keep a track of the activities of their children on social media. They should also educate themselves and their children regarding the positive and negative impacts of social media and networking.
Hence we can say that social media and networking used in the right amount can be useful to gather information and other data. But if overused it can have drastic impact on the lives of children.
