TV- how much of it should your child watch?
In recent times wherever we go we see kids in front of a screen all the time. It maybe phones, tablets or the television. Phones and tablets are not as easily accessible to children. TV’s are the most easily. Parents often believe that it is harmless. Unfortunately that is not true. Overtime studies have shown that watching TV for excessive time is very harmful for children.
It has been seen that children who watch TV everyday for more than 4 hours tend to be overweight. Kids who watch violent TV tend to be more aggressive and often believe the world is filled with more bad things than good. Characters in TV can also be deceptive. Since it is not reality, extreme behavior is seen. This tends to influence decision making skills of children. Hence it is very important to keep tabs on how much TV time is given to children.
For babies and children up to one and a half years old no TV time should be given. Their brain is at an extremely sensitive stage. They make memories really quickly and hence it is important to keep them away from any unwanted scenes and experiences.
For children of ages one and a half year onwards to two years around 15-20 minutes of TV is acceptable. During this time parents should accompany their children. Parents should make sure that what their children are watching is either healthy cartoons or any informative substance. It should have a happy mood to it so that it affects the children positively.
For preschoolers or children up to the age of 5 one hour of TV time is acceptable. For children of this age also parents should accompany them. Parents should keep track of what they are watching and also make sure that is it lively and not violent. They should also try and make them understand and inform them about what they are watching.

For children of age 6 years till 18 years parents should keep fixed limits on TV time. It should not be more than two and a half hours a day. TV time should also not exceed 45 minutes at one stretch. It is important to contain TV time for them as they are at an age where they get influenced very easily. It can be the behavior of characters or simply advertisements. All these can easily influence and mold the character of your children.
All these steps should be followed so that children do not adversely get affected be leisure time and understand that TV time should not come in the way of getting proper sleep, physical activity or studying.
