ARE YOUR CHILDREN SAFE IN SCHOOL?
Children spend more than half of the day at school. It is important for them to be safe in school. Parents should not have to worry when their children are at school. Schools should be a safe and holistic environment for children. If schools are not safe then children are unable to focus on learning the skills needed for a successful education and future.
Children have different kinds of threats in school that can keep distracting them from the learning process. Threats can be in the form of bullying, fights, theft or robbery, classroom disorder, assaults, sexual attacks and racism. Emotional threat is also a major concern for schools. Injuries are also a great danger factor to school children.
Statistics showed that 44% of the deaths to children from 1 to 4 years old were injury related. The percentage of deaths attributed to injuries for 5 to 14 year old children was 52%, and 63% for the age group of 15 to 24 years old. With respect to children, one problem is a lack of safety education.
Schools can take various measures and steps to improve safety for their students. First of all schools should teach their children basic measures to take in case of safety emergencies. Some emergencies can be floods, earthquakes, drowning and other injuries resulting from falling down and various activities.
Schools should teach children the immediate measures that need to be taken in case of earthquakes. They should be told the most efficient way to stay safe and keep out of harm’s way. The same should be taught for floods also. In case of drowning also children should be taught how to perform basic C.P.R.
Children should be encouraged to keep a first aid box with them at all times in their bag pack. The first aid kit should contain all the basic medical equipments and products. Children should also be taught the first aid actions that need to be taken in case of cuts and scratches. They should be able to perform first aid to prevent infections and any further harm.
It should also be made compulsory for all schools to teach children the fire drill. Fires in school are one of the largest concerns of parents in major parts of the world. All schools should have fire extinguishers installed and children should be told how to use them also.
Parents should have peace of mind when then send their children to school. Hence while choosing a school also parents should be very careful. Parents should make sure they feel secure and safe when they send their children to school. Thus schools should have all the necessary safety arrangements.
