I am sure your child was really chirpy when you took them to shop for a school bag. Children love spotting out their favorite cartoon character or superhero in their schoolbag. But little do they or the parents themselves realize that those heavy school bags can be a cause of major health problems.

A recent survey conducted by Times of India, shows that more than 30% of school- going kids constantly suffer from back-pain, spinal deformities and lung problems.  And if these problems are not taken care of, they can turn into a permanent disability. Various surveys have shown that students nowadays carry bags 30-40% of their body weight which is way more than the specified limit which is 10% of a child’s weight according to Children’s School Bag Act 2006. A number of leading pediatricians and spine surgeons have confirmed that the cause of back-pain and deformities in children is undoubtedly the result of carrying heavy school bags. Even with advancements in technology and the introduction of smart classrooms, shoulders of little one’s are burdened with reference books, assignment notebooks, class notebooks, stationary kit and fifty other things.

Many parents have complained and plead to the school authorities to act on this matter seriously but still many schools are continuing with their traditional practices. Only a handful of schools have adopted the ‘locker systems’ in schools which allow students to keep some of their heavy reference books and notebooks in the lockers so the need of carrying them every day is done away. Also, they have opted for online portals that allow the assignments to be submitted online with access to both teachers and parents to the student’s profile so they can have a better check on the student’s performance. But there is only a little fraction of students who are privileged to have such amenities.

It is the need of the hour to understand the severity that this problem beholds and protect our budding flowers from monstrous diseases like spondylolisthesis and spondylitis. It is also advised that the school authorities take up measures to reduce the number of books to be carried by students every day. Hopefully, this matter is considered seriously by our officials and acted on.
