Importance of Educating the Girl Child
Our society considers women inferior to men. Women have always been denied of their rights. They have to struggle for their right to education, right to vote, equal share in property and equal pay for work. They are discriminated against in every stage of life; with the birth of a girl her struggle to survive begins. When a baby girl is born, she is seen as a burden, she is not sent to school, married off at a young age and continues to be discriminated till her death.
In India where girls are worshiped as goddess, they are discriminated the most. Female foeticide still prevails in our society leading to an unbalanced sex ratio.
Female foeticide, child labour, dowry, physical violence, rape and murder, girls have to face it all. Reports of abuse, rape and violence against women continue to shame humanity. Incidents such as the Nirbhaya case have highlighted the sad state of our society. Girls are afraid to walk alone on streets, travel in buses and return home late as there is a sense of fear. Time has come to ensure the safety of our girls. They should be allowed to live with dignity not fear.
Women have time and again proven their worth to the world. Be it politics, science, sports or movies they have shown their capabilities. In the recently concluded Olympic Games, it was the girls who brought us medals and made us proud. A society can only progress if their women are empowered. By providing them their basic rights of health care, education and equal opportunity we can give them a life of dignity.
It is not only the responsibility of the government or the NGOs; it is our collective responsibility to change the perception against women. A girl is a blessing not a curse. Time has come to give women their due and ensure their safety . BetiBachao ,BetiPadhao, BetiKhelao!!
